Dubai Electricity and Water Authority concluded its participation in the World Future Energy Summit and the accompanying exhibition in Abu Dhabi. Media were interested in DEWA’s renewable energy initiatives and projects. The announcement by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA during the summit to increase the percentage of renewables in Dubai’s energy mix target to 7% by 2020 and 15% by 2030 was the centre of attention of local and international media outlets, which interviewed him to learn more about DEWA’s major projects to achieve this target. DEWA recently doubled the capacity of phase two of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park from 100MW to 200 MW, which is based on the Independent Power Producer model. The consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA and Spain’s TSK was selected as a Preferred Bidder with the lowest price, which reflects the trust and interest of international investors in Dubai and DEWA. “We have learned from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai that there is no impossible in life, and that the impossible cannot be where there is perseverance and faith. We derive this spirit from His Highness to achieve the ambition of Dubai to become number one worldwide. Even though some people were worried that the latest drop in oil prices would affect the renewable and clean energy sector, in the UAE we are determined to continue our efforts to build and develop a greener economy. One of the most important advantages we have in the UAE is the commitment and full support of our wise leadership towards building a green and sustainable future, for generations to come,” said Al Tayer. Al Tayer praised the tireless support of the UAE Government under the leadership of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to achieve the sustainable development of the UAE. He also thanked HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for his patronage of the World Energy Future Summit (WFES 2015,) which has become a global summit to discuss energy security and its future and ensuring development and innovation in sustainable energy around the world. DEWA participated in various activities at the summit. Al Tayer participated in the UAE–UK Energy Group workshop, which was held under the patronage and presence of HE Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy of the UAE. Government and industry experts, and academics from both the UAE and UK took part in the workshop. Al Tayer chaired a session on smart cities at the workshop. The other two sessions focused on building efficiency and energy efficiency. A part of WFES, the workshop promoted dialogue and raised awareness about global environmental and economic challenges. The Abu Dhabi Sustainability week is hosted by Masdar. The workshop discussed three main topics: smart cities, building efficiency, and energy efficiency. Al Tayer chaired a session on smart cities at the workshop.
