DEWA outlines easy steps for installing Solar PV Panels on rooftops to generate electricity

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has outlined easy steps to install photovoltaic systems in homes and buildings to generate solar power. This is part of Shams Dubai initiative, which DEWA has launched to install photovoltaic (PV) panels on rooftops to produce solar energy and connect it to DEWA’s grid. The installation process starts with the customer contacting one of the consultants or contractors accredited by DEWA to study the possibility of installing the solar power system and suggest the best solution. The consultant or contractor then obtains the necessary approvals from DEWA. These include an NOC for installing solar energy system and connecting it to the power network, and approvals for the solar system design that meets all the requirements. After obtaining the necessary approvals, the consultant or contractor undertakes on-site work. After completing installation, they will submit a notification to DEWA to conduct the technical inspection of the site and install the meter to complete the connection process. The electricity produced is used in the premises and the surplus is exported to DEWA’s grid. An offset between exported and imported electricity units is conducted and the customer account is settled based on this offset. “DEWA supports the vision of our wise leadership, which outlines the roadmap for our work and initiatives to enhance the competitiveness of the UAE and Dubai. We are fully-prepared to effectively and positively contribute to building a smart city. Shams Dubai is an important milestone in the achievement of the Smart Dubai initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world. Shams Dubai also supports the Dubai Plan 2021 for Dubai’s environment to be clean, healthy, and sustainable, and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, developed by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy to support sustainable energy projects in Dubai and increase renewable energy targets in Dubai’s energy mix,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. Shams Dubai will contribute to establishing a culture of sustainability among customers in Dubai by encouraging them to produce clean solar energy and make use of the connection with DEWA’s grid. This contributes to achieving Dubai’s vision by producing their own energy needs. The step underlines Dubai’s leadership in clean and safe renewable energy. The use of renewable energy helps decrease dependence on traditional energy sources and ensures a sustainable future for generations to come. The initiative implements council resolution number 46 of 2014, issued by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, to regulate the connection of solar energy to Dubai’s power grid, added Al Tayer. DEWA has urged building owners to take advantage of Shams Dubai initiative and locally generate clean energy which would help reduce their electricity bills, increase their property value, protect the environment, support Dubai's economy, and guarantee a sustainable future for the Emirate. DEWA announced the first project under Shams Dubai initiative, in collaboration with Dubai Airports, to supply Dubai World Central—Al Maktoum International Airport in Jebel Ali with solar energy. The first step in implementing the initiative was installing photovoltaic panels to produce 30kW of electricity there.
