In a new achievement for Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the DEWA Academy has received final accreditation for the technical major from the Business and Technology Education Council (Pearson BTEC) in UK. The council has over 21 million students from 46 countries, including the UAE, registered for the academic year 2014-2015. Reflecting the goals of UAE Vision 2021 to develop capacity of Emiratis and make the UAE one of the best countries in the world by 2021, the DEWA Academy underlines DEWA’s strategy for preparing national cadres to be part of the DEWA’s fast-growing operations and to consolidate its leading role as a national organisation contributing effectively to the development of the nation as well as sharpening the skills of citizens as per the government's Emiratisation strategic goals. “In line with our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, DEWA collaborated with BTEC, a global vocational training organisation, in 2013 to launch the ‘DEWA Academy.’ It aims to prepare young female and male Emiratis in various technical and professional fields through theoretical and practical training covering different areas of the industry including generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and desalination of water. DEWA grants graduate students who have completed years of study in its Academy a degree from BTCE,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. “Launching the Academy is part of DEWAs’ strategy to develop the skills of its technical staff and support Emiratisation. It aims to enable the largest possible number of young nationals to meet the objectives of various sections of DEWA. We adopt a clear strategy in the development and training of Emiratis, as our focus is on providing staff with appropriate skills the meet the needs of DEWA’s work environment. The Academy grants degrees in accordance with highest global guidelines of competent establishments while strengthening the national identity,” added Al Tayer. “DEWA adopts an ambitious plan to increase the percentage of Emiratisation. Today, Emiratisation at senior management is at 83.53%, mid-management has achieved 44.39%, and in non-supervisory positions it reached 33.38%. The Academy also plays an important role in the development of Emiratis and offers a curriculum that is developed and approved by the highest and latest international standards. It provides students with the required technical and professional capacity to compete in the highly competitive labour market in Dubai and the world” concluded Al Tayer. “The Academy relies on the curriculum of Dubai Educational Zone and the Ministry of Education in cooperation with BTCE in three disciplines that meets the requirements of DEWA, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and maintenance and operation of equipment. Students can attend the Academy for a period of three consecutive years to complete the secondary school from grade 10 to grade 12. The Academy has now 83 students and the first batch will graduate next year. DEWA will employ all graduates and ensure access to all privileges provided to employees,” said Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
