HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), received a high-level delegation led by Dr Mohammed Al Smadi, Secretary General of the Arab Parliamentarians Forum for Population and Development. During the meeting, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer stressed the importance of cooperation with the Arab Parliamentarians Forum for Population and Development, especially in light of the global challenges facing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
He expressed DEWA’s commitment to supporting initiatives and projects that promote sustainable development and contribute to improving the quality of life in the Arab world. HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer reviewed DEWA’s most prominent projects that support sustainable development, which are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s key projects and initiatives, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world, with a production capacity of over 5,000 megawatts by 2030, using photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar power, with total investments of AED 50 billion. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 6.5 million tons annually, strengthening Dubai’s position as a global hub for clean energy and green economy.
HE highlighted also the Green Hydrogen Project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the Hatta pumped-storage Hydroelectric Power Plant, the first hydroelectric power plant to generate electricity using stored water energy in the Arabian Gulf region, with a production capacity of up to 250 megawatts.
His Excellency also tackled the Green Charger Initiative launched by DEWA to provide a wide world-class network of green charger stations for electric vehicles, which includes, in cooperation with its partners, more than 700 “Green Charger” stations across the emirate, which supports the steady growth witnessed by the emirate in adopting electric vehicles, and represents an important step in the process of supporting green mobility and achieving Dubai’s goals of Net-Zero by 2050.
Al Tayer spoke about the Al Sheraa Building, the new headquarters of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, the tallest, largest, and smartest zero-energy government building in the world.
The building has been designed to obtain LEED Platinum and Well Gold certifications. This state-of-the-art facility will incorporate advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big and Open Data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), along with over 1,000 m² of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) panels to meet net-zero targets.
Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s competitive results, surpassing prominent European and American companies in efficiency and reliability. DEWA’s line losses in electricity transmission and distribution networks were reduced to 2%, compared to 6%-7% in Europe and the US. Water network losses reached 4.6%, significantly lower than the approximately 15% recorded in North America. DEWA also achieved a world record in electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML) per year, with Dubai recording 0.94 minutes per customer, compared to around 15 minutes by leading utility companies in the European Union.
The delegation expressed their thanks and gratitude to HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer for his distinguished efforts and effective support for population and development issues in the Arab world. They praised his role in raising awareness of sustainable development issues and contributing to achieving comprehensive development goals in the region.
This visit comes within the framework of following up on the implementation of the Arab Parliamentarians Forum on Population and Development Action Plan, which aims to support Arab parliamentarians in performing their legislative and oversight roles in the areas of population and development. The plan includes providing the necessary information, holding training courses, and dialogue discussion sessions, in addition to participating in regional and international conferences.
