For years, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has organised mangrove-planting and beach clean-up campaigns at Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, in co-operation with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group. These campaigns – in which DEWA Group employees, their families and DEWA Academy students have been involved – have helped to improve water quality and marine life habitats in the reserve, and led to an increase in the number of mangrove trees, which are natural carbon reservoirs.
Volunteers who participated in DEWA’s environmental campaigns have praised the company for its positive role and support, and for giving them an opportunity to contribute to efforts that have a sustainable impact. The volunteers emphasised that DEWA is one of the most prominent organisations committed to supporting national efforts to preserve natural resources and raise societal awareness through environmental programmes and activities.
“The experience of organising the mangrove-planting and beach clean-up event in Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary was full of achievements and excitement. It required careful co-ordination between volunteers and staff. We faced challenges such as the changing weather but the joint efforts resulted in great success as participants collected waste from the beach and planted mangrove trees with enthusiasm, supporting efforts to restore the ecosystem and enhance environmental awareness. What made me happiest was the sense of accomplishment we all felt when seeing the results. I am happy to see the number of participants increasing every year and achieving amazing results that exceed expectations. This experience has highlighted the importance of teamwork and the impact of volunteer community initiatives to achieve the sustainability goals of Dubai,” said Nour Ibrahim Saad, Senior Engineer in DEWA’s Business Development and Excellence Division.
Jafar Ayappally, Senior Electrician in DEWA’s Distribution Power Division, said: “It was truly inspiring to witness DEWA's commitment to environmental sustainability firsthand. The initiative not only helped preserve our beautiful coastline but also raised awareness about the importance of protecting our natural habitats and wildlife. I am proud to be associated with such a pioneering organisation that leads the way in environmental and sustainable achievements. Motivated by my organisation, I have achieved over 90 volunteering hours with Emirates Nature-WWF.”
Noora Mohammad Humaid Rashed Alsuwaidi, Senior Engineer in DEWA’s Water & Civil Division, said she had a great experience volunteering, once again, for the mangrove-planting and beach clean-up campaign at Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary.
“My participation has increased my knowledge about the importance of mangroves, which have a great ability to absorb carbon. I also learnt about the importance of the seaweed we collected, which is a valuable resource that can be used as organic fertilisers, reducing the use of artificial fertilisers. It can also be processed for biofuel and other applications,” said Alsuwaidi.
Ahmad Abdulla Abdulrahim Alameli, Senior Engineer in DEWA’s Water & Civil Division, said DEWA’s campaigns reflect its commitment to achieve sustainable development goals and better protect the environment and mangrove forests.
“Participating in such initiatives highlights our role in preserving natural resources for generations to come, and I am proud to be involved in these ongoing projects,” said Alameli.
Mehamood Syed from Mai Dubai’s Hotel, Restaurant and Cafe/Catering (HoReCa) & Exports division said it had been an honour to participate in DEWA’s campaigns to protect the environment and plant mangrove trees, noting that they are a pivotal tool for natural adaptation to the effects of climate change.
“DEWA’s initiatives not only contribute to preserving our natural environment but also foster a sense of community involvement. I look forward to continuing to support such meaningful initiatives in the future,” said Syed.
