18 July: A reaffirmed commitment to follow the Union's course

On 18 July 1971, the late Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, together with the Rulers of the Emirates, met at the Guest Palace in Dubai, where they signed the declaration forming the Union and the Constitution of the United Arab Emirates, officially proclaiming the name of our nation. That day marked the beginning of one of the most successful models of unity and development in modern history. This culminated on the second of December, when the Union flag was raised, signifying the birth of a country that chose to build its future on the foundations of unity and forward-looking vision.

Since that historic day, the Union Pledge has become an enduring national symbol, inspiring generations with the values of sacrifice, loyalty and solidarity. It reflects the sense of shared destiny instilled by the Founding Fathers in the heart of the nation. With the wise leadership’s designation of 18 July each year as Union Pledge Day, we are not merely commemorating a pivotal moment in history, but renewing our promise to continue the journey of giving and leadership. This commitment is guided by the ambitious vision laid down by our nation’s founders, and steadfastly pursued under the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The UAE has brought this pledge to life through a pioneering developmental journey - centred on people, driven by innovation and aimed at uplifting the nation. In the spirit of the Union, the UAE has become a global model in channelling resources towards building a sustainable economy and cohesive society, under a leadership that places foresight and future readiness at the heart of its agenda. Today, our country stands at the forefront of global efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, tackle climate change and accelerate the transition to a green and sustainable economy.

As we commemorate this cherished occasion, we renew our pledge to uphold the spirit of the Union. We place the UAE’s interests at the forefront of our priorities with a resolve that knows no impossibility, determined to remain active partners in shaping a prosperous and sustainable future for all Emiratis. The Union flag will forever remain a symbol of pride and inspiration for everyone who calls this nation home.

Union Pledge Day is a renewed national milestone - a day when we reaffirm our loyalty to our wise leadership and our commitment to continuing the path of the Union, adhering to the National values established by the Founding Fathers.
