Employees of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recycled 412,041 plastic bottles and aluminium cans in 2025 using smart recycling machines installed across several DEWA buildings. Operated through DEWA’s Smart Office app, the machines scan employees’ QR codes, enabling them to earn points for each transaction and qualify for monthly raffle draws offering valuable prizes.

The initiative supports DEWA’s vision to be a globally leading sustainable and innovative corporation committed to achieving net zero by 2050, while reflecting its efforts to promote sustainable practices in both the workplace and at home.

Since the installation of the machines in October 2022 and up to the end of the first quarter of 2026, employees have diverted more than 19 tonnes of waste from landfill by recycling over 1.3 million plastic bottles and aluminium cans.

Supporting the circular economy

This initiative aligns with the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041, which promotes innovation in waste management, recycling and waste-to-energy solutions, while delivering practical and sustainable responses to environmental challenges. It also supports DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy, which focuses on optimising resource use and maximising economic, social and environmental value to support sustainability in the UAE and Dubai.

DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy serves as a comprehensive framework guiding its efforts to expand circular economy applications and adopt global best practices, contributing to sustainable economic growth while protecting the environment and ensuring the responsible use of natural resources. The strategy is built on five key principles: circular design and the use of recyclable materials; optimised asset management; value retention and end-of-life treatment; promotion of renewable energy and energy and water efficiency; and activation of circular partnerships. It also highlights DEWA’s value chain, with a focus on smart users, circular procurement and supplier engagement.
